NOTEWORTHY EXHIBIT

Air Brake Chair

Air Brake Chair

Using pulleys you can lift your own weight 6 feet in the air with very little effort in our air brake chair. This exhibit has always been a favorite at the Discovery Center, as visitors line up for their turn to pull their own weight off of the ground.

Once up in the air, there is always a little apprehension to just let go of the rope. However, this exhibit not only demonstrates how pulleys help you to lift heavy loads, but also how simple "wings" on a fly wheel help to slow your descent through resistance in the air. Without these wings, the chair would fall quickly back to the ground. With the wings pushing against the air the movement of the chair back down is slow and smooth.

You can view the whole air brake chair experience by watching the short video below!

Discovery Market
Discovery Market Visit Discovery Market, where little ones are encouraged to explore, imagine and discover through cooperative play learning valuable life skills, for 5 and under.

EXHIBIT GALLERY

High & Low Pressure

Spin this exhibit, and as if from outer space, watch high and low pressure points interact as a mini-hurricane swirls below.

Centripetal Wheel

Get this wheel spinning fast enough and watch as the stuffed animals cling to the outer cylinder wall.

Dune Machine

Observe as the wind continually shifts the sand around objects, just as it does with snow and sand in nature.

Turbulent Orb

Spin this globe and watch the swirling turbulence within.

Tornado

Create your own 7 foot tall tornado as it swirls up from the ground.

Bernoulli Blower

Suspend large objects in mid-air as the Bernoulli Blower surrounds the object with invisible air flow and keeps objects floating right before your eyes.

Keva Blocks

Build huge structures from scratch with our Keva Blocks.

Bubble Wall

Blow gigantic bubbles from our Bubble Wall exhibit, or see how you can stick your hand through the soapy wall without breaking it.

Bones

See what stresses do to your bones and this side-by-side exhibit showing a real bone and a transparent plastic bone.

Zoetrope

Spin the Zoetrope to see images on cards come to life, just like they did in old cartoons.

AM Radio

You will be amazed by the simplicity of the old crystal sets that allowed the reception of AM radio as you explore the inner workings of radio.

Shadow Box

Listen for the beep just before the strobe light flashes and captures your shadow on our photo-sensitive wall.

Telescope

See how glass lenses work together to bring the world closer.

Color Removal

Play with our prism to separate out all of the colors of the spectrum.

Pin Screen

Push objects up under our pin screen and see them represented in 3D by thousands of pin heads.

Mirror

A simple mirror can be used to make you appear to be floating in air to passers by.

Looking Glass

Is that you in the looking glass, or someone else? See how one-way mirrors work with and without back-lighting.

Floating Objects

Use our blower to see how high you can raise objects into the air.

Robot Arm

Manipulate the mechanical arm and hand to pick up balls and move them around in the display case.

Prisms

Play with a variety of our light and prism exhibits to bend light and separate light colors.

Spelling Robot

Enter words into our computer and watch the robot arm spell the words out for you.
