Magic Planet
October 10: 9 am-12 noon Grades 3-4, 1-4 pm Grades 5-6
Explore the Magic Planet, the Discovery Center’s new digital display. Watch the sphere-shaped screen to see how deep the ocean is, how high the mountains are, or compare the planets – all at the push of a button. Learn how to really use this amazing educational tool!
microWorlds with Parallax Robotics
October 17: 9 am – 4 pm Grades 4-6
Parents join their students in this special, all-day class to delve more fully into robotics and programming, using the advanced Parallax kits. Some robotics experience required, along with a parent eager to share the adventure. An extra fee of $143 covers the cost of the Parallax kit you get to keep!
Minerals & Mountains
October 24: 9 am-12 noon Grades 3-4, 1-4 pm Grades 5-6
Study how rocks are made and run tests to see what minerals they are made of. Examine the forces that create mountains, continents and earthquakes. Use a real seismograph to image the earth.
Halloween Special Effects
October 31: 9 am-12 noon Grades 3-4, 1-4 pm Grades 1-2
Create eerie, glowing blue lights, slime that glows in the dark, and fake but realistic wounds and blood. Eat edible insects, taste witch’s brew and more!
Archaeology

Learn about the amazing people of the past by re-creating cave paintings, making clay pots, studying primitive tools and assembling skeletons.
Flight Physics
November 7: Grades 3-5, 1-4 pm
Investigate flight in many fascinating forms, from rockets to planes to helicopters. Study their design, then build them and try them out!

Study the mysteries of the planets, stars and galaxies. Learn about the constellations and the myths surrounding them in our exciting STARLAB planetarium.

Examine today’s energy resources and possibilities for the future. Experiment with solar, electric, and wind energy.
Invention & Design

Explore the inventing process, then use it to create and test designs for vehicles, structures and contraptions.
Paleontology

Learn to track and identify wildlife. Use radio telemetry and other tools to see and understand animals better and explore what they need to survive.

June 8-12 Oceanographer - Grades 6 to 8
Learn about our cool coast to the west and the creatures that live in the Pacific Ocean. We’ll learn about the tide pools to the deep sea, and we’ll try out some of the different methods used to study the ocean.

June 15-19 Invent It! - Grades 5 & 6
What is an invention? Learn about inventive thinking and invention-making. Master some important scientific principles, then use them as you challenge yourself to solve a perplexing problem in an unusual way.

June 22-26 Experiment & Engineer - Grades 4 & 6
Learn to do it yourself. Experiment with laws of physics and develop new skills. Engineer towers, bridges and domes. Make a propeller-driven car. Build and launch your own solid fuel rocket and hot air balloon. Invent something new.

June 29-July 3 Junior Scientists - Kindergarten
Explore a multitude of sciences! Through fun, hands-on activities, learn about a wide range of topics including: space, chemistry, biology, making toys and building structures. Half-day sessions, morning or afternoon, all week long!

July 6-10 Toy Box - Grades 1 to 3
Make your own toy box. Then fill it with toys you create while learning the science behind how toys work. Make a kaleidoscope, sidewalk chalk, a balancing toy, a balloon car, a kite, a musical instrument, a space shuttle model that flies, and much more! 9 am-4 pm. July 6-10 Wildlife Biology with Zoo Boise - Grades 4 to 6
Use the tools of biologists to study wildlife. Students will spend mornings at Zoo Boise and afternoons at DCI. Learn how satellites, radio telemetry and maps are used to track animals and to study the habitats animals need to survive. Explore how genetic tests help endangered animals. Examine wild animals’ intriguing anatomy and much more.

July 13-17 Archaeology & Paleontology - Grades 2 to 4
Take a step back in time as you learn about dinosaurs, mammoths and some of our earliest ancestors. Explore fossils, primitive tools, cave paintings and ancient pottery, and possibly what dinosaurs really looked like! Plenty of hands on experiments will help you answer some questions about life long ago. 9 am-4 pm. DCI member: $150; non-member: $175
July 20-24 DNA & Forensics - Grades 4 to 6
Learn how crime scene investigators like the ones on CSI solve crimes using DNA, the hereditary material in humans and just about every other organism. Analyze fibers, bones, handwriting and DNA. Lift fingerprints, find traces of blood and saliva, perform chemical tests and look for microbes under a microscope. Then use your new investigation techniques to solve the case! 9 am-4 pm. July 20-24 Explore, Experiment & Build - Grades 1 to 3
In partnership with Boise Parks and Recreation, off-site at Collister Elementary School, 4426 Catalpa in Boise. Join us for a half-day multi-science camp full of hands-on activities. Explore exciting topics such as astronomy, geology, weather, electricity, chemistry and flight.
9:00-12:00 $75.00 Drop off and Pick up at Collister. No Transportation from the Discovery Center
July 27-31 Robotics I - Grades 1 to 3
Experiment with rovers and electronics while learning how robots work and where they are used in the modern world. Then build your own robot to take home.

August 3-7 Experiment, Build & Create - Grades 1 to 3
In partnership with Boise Parks & Recreation, offsite at Horizon Elementary School, 730 N. Mitchell in Boise.
Join us for a half-day multi-science camp full of hands-on activities. Explore exciting topics such as forensics, chemistry, genetics, structural engineering, simple machines, animation and optical illusions.
Half-day sessions, 9 a.m.-12 noon -- $75 – Drop off & pick up at Horizon. No transport provided from the Discovery Center
August 3-7 Space - Grades 1 & 2
Be an astronaut. Design rockets, explore the secrets of the planets, stars, comets and living in outer space. Find out what a shooting star really is and hold one in your hand. Enter our exciting STARLAB and watch the night sky appear above you.

Delve more fully into robots and programming and how robots are used in the modern world as you solve special robotic challenges.

August 17-21 Aviation & Weather - Grades 5 & 6
Learn about the science of flight and weather as you explore the atmosphere – Learn how airplanes are able to climb into the sky and the dynamics of severe weather including tornadoes! This class will explore the topics of storms, radar, icing and turbulence, and what these hazards mean to pilots and passengers. 9 am-4 pm : DCI member: $150; non-member: $175
